I was sitting at my local bar, enjoying some wine and a pseudo sci-fi novel when I struck up a conversation with the man sitting next to me. He was in his mid 50's, graying goatee type facial hair, sci-fi book. After a few pleasantries, I find out he did the ads for Steve Madden with the big bobble head girls. (The ones that feminists had so much trouble with) Turns out when Steve Madden was in jail for some kind of inside trading scandal, he put shout outs in the ads! The designer, my friendly goateed sci-fi buddy would get instructions to put names such as, "Big Claw" into the ads! He mentioned the one above, saying that a shout out was by the mailbox. I can't find it..maybe in the magazine ads with a microscope. He also mentioned that while Madden was in jail, he was not legally allowed to run his company. So, he had the designers come to visit him (he was allowed two visitors at a time) each wearing two different new shoe designs. They would discreetly put their feet up on the table where he could see them through the glass, and he would give them hand signals about which shoes he liked. Steve Madden just got a couple more cool points in my book.
